Testimonials

Same Roots, Same Crown, Different Shades of Brown, the inaugural book by Dr. Alisa Cook explores the African American diaspora and culture by depicting the everyday life in an African American family. Young readers get to see visions of themselves in the pictures and will readily relate to the bright and colorful pages of the book. Same Roots, Same Crown also provides a welcomed lesson in African American history as Dr. Cook presents information on a few notable African Americans who played a part in her journey to self awareness. The book is extremely empowering for young readers who will understandably enjoy reading it over and over again.

Same Roots Same Crown Different Shades of Brown is everything I needed to read as a child. I'm so happy that I get to read this beautifully written book with my children. I loved the representation of every shade of brown and how Alisa highlights what's special about each and everyone.

S. Jones

Loved the self love message and the mini history lesson of the Phenomenal Figures!

M. Ellis

I have so many different shades of brown in my household and Alisa was able to see the need and the importance of this story. This is huge! This seed needs to be planted all over the world so that we can grow away from colorism and self hate. I absolutely love it and have read it so much that I know it by heart.

S. Harris

Great message for the kids. It's nice to see representation of how families come in all different shades and how that's okay.

B. Williams

Easy read and loved the representation.

J. Brown

Same Roots Same Crown Different Shades of Brown is a favorite in our house. I love that my daughter sees beautiful children around her age who look like her. From the crowns to the skin, she will learn about all of the beautiful shades of our people. I also enjoy the Five Phenomenal Figures at the end of the book, as she is also learning about history and our roots.
